C for Charity
Charity. Whilst this might not be the first word that springs to mind when you think about people getting in to debt, charity and debt are sometimes more interlinked than you’d think.
One of the most touching and unusual cases I have dealt with during my experience as a debt advisor occurred a few months ago when I went to visit Patti, a lovely South African lady and registered nurse. I’ve never met anyone who worked as hard as she did – working gruelling night shifts throughout the week just to pay off her debts.
We sat down to figure out exactly what had happened and it turned out Patti’s debt had spiralled out of control several years ago, when she decided to help her country by collecting unwanted clothing, footwear and food and shipping them over in big containers.
Instead of getting proper advice she had taken it upon herself to hire the containers and pay for the shipping herself. (She didn’t realise she could have received tremendous financial help for this). As a result, she managed to accrue over £20,000 debt.
After sitting down with Patti and working out her client financial planner, I managed to reduce her outgoings to her creditors by half. She was over the moon and so thankful.
Sometimes in this job, charitable acts are needed. It can be really difficult seeing those who are physically vulnerable being hounded by creditors after getting into debt as a result of external circumstances.
One particularly helpless client I visited had suffered a massive stroke in 1999 and had lost his job. Despite being equity rich – Bob owned his own home, he was living on income support benefits and couldn’t get a secured loan.
Bob was referred to me by an introducer because he was being chased by his creditors, to the further detriment of his health. When I went to see him I could see how he had been left disabled by the stroke, his brother was there by his side the whole time.
This was a situation in which I managed to help a very vulnerable person, who had fallen on hard circumstances through no fault of his own. Helping these kinds of clients is extremely rewarding.
