Family debt advice business scoops Franchisee of the Year award

Describing themselves as a family business, debt advisors and EuroDebt franchise owners, Carina Cameron and her partner Kevin Bullock recently won the award for Franchisee of the Year at the Northern leg of the EuroDebt Franchise Conference, held in Barnsley.

The Derby-based franchise-owners will have been debt advisors for three years in November, and say that their first award came as a great surprise to them.

Carina has attributed their success in helping clients find the right debt solutions to their “family business” approach.

She said: “Kevin is a former mortgage broker and so he takes care of the one-on-one client appointments. He’s great at sitting down with people and working out the best route for them, whether it’s a Debt Management Plan, IVA or just having a look at their finances and working out where savings can be made.”

Carina takes care of the business development side of the business, and is also looking at bringing her sister into their offices to complete the close-knit firm and help promote debt advice.

“I’m keen to break down the stigma of having debt problems,” Carina continued. “I’m always thinking of new ideas about how to reach out to businesses and individuals.”

Currently situated in the RTC Business Park, near Derby city centre, Carina and Kevin have started to build ties with small firms in the surrounding offices, offering support if needed, or trying to work together to promote products that can help their clients.

Carina explained: “I think debt issues are getting worse for many businesses and individuals and we need to work with other businesses to make sure that people are getting the correct debt help and advice they need.”

Kevin has also been working with mortgage brokers in the Derby area, ringing around regularly to check if they have any clients that they can’t help through remortgaging or a debt consolidation loan.

In a recent case, a brokerage contacted him about one of their clients – a businessman who could no longer afford to keep up with monthly debt repayments of £1,700, due to his business being affected by the recession. Kevin met with the client and, after going through his finances with him, advised him to take out a Debt Management Plan (DMP), cutting his debt repayments down to £172 a month.

What’s more, the brokerage that referred the client to Kevin and Carina earned £799 commission.

Kevin said: “I was pleased with the outcome of the case, even where a broker thought they couldn’t help we found a solution for their client and they earned a great commission.”

Sue Davison, Regional Franchise Support Manager for EuroDebt, said: “I’m particularly proud of Kevin and Carina. For a young family they’ve accomplished so much and manage to juggle the business perfectly, with Carina promoting and developing and Kevin taking care of the appointments.

“They haven’t tried to reinvent the wheel, they just run their business simply and effectively – they keep in touch with their introducers through sending out newsletters and networking, and they keep in touch with head office for marketing resources and training. Well done to both of them, they thoroughly deserve the Franchisee of the Year award.”
