What with the recession still biting at our heels, our debt problems and loss of income mean that new ways of saving money are needed to avoid falling into the dreaded debt spiral... so read on...
Whether it’s a new sofa you’re after, a holiday abroad, or just adinner out with your partner on a Friday night, there’s something for you and if it not’s free it’s definitely cheap – and very likely green too, so you can feel worthy and enjoy yourself.

1. Envirofone.com We’ve all got them cluttering up a drawer somewhere – in fact I have a friend who has no less than six ... that’s old mobile phones, of course. Some may be built to break after a year, but they’re not built to be thrown away and Envirofone will take them off your hands, helping you make money whilst doing something good for the environment too!
Envirofone makes the process simple; you just need to follow three steps. The site is easy to navigate and they even send you a padded envelope for the phone to be sent away in. Once they’ve checked the phone meets their requirements the money is transferred to your account. And even if your phone doesn’t – it’s too damaged, barred or is the wrong model – Envirofone will take a look at it and see what they can do...
According to Keith Dixon, head of customer services, the average customer walks away with £40: “Everything about it is beneficial. We make money, the customer makes money and it’s good for the environment,” he said.
2. Vouchercodes.co.uk Usually it’s only around Christmas that the endless meals-for-two vouchers clog up our inboxes, but with Voucher Codes you can choose when you want to have a half-price dinner. From pizza to sushi, you just print off a voucher for affordable, good quality dining.
3. Myvouchercodes.co.uk Sometimes known as promotional codes, e-vouchers or discount codes, these are simply special codes which will get you a discount / money off the listed retail price of many goods, at a variety of different online retailers. Online shopping has never been better.
4. Freecycle.org This siteboasts 1,722,575 members. A grassroots organisation, it’s an online platform from which people can give away and pick up unwanted items and wanted items. Everything posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. You can put even put Wanted messages for specific items.
5. Gumtree.com Although it started life as a London based site, Gumtree now covers cities in 60 different countries. The site allows members to post an ad about pretty much anything and you can browse ads about pretty much anything too: so that selling stuff and finding stuff is cheap – easy peasy lemon squeezey.
