Former mortgage packager tells of transition to award winning debt advisor
The downturn in the housing market had a catastrophic effect on many in the mortgage business, causing a number of small firms to shut up shop as credit dried up.
However, when Ray Rainbird, from Lancashire, saw his mortgage packaging business close he decided to seize the opportunity to diversify into other areas.
After attending a EuroDebt seminar, which introduced him to the debt solutions market, he then became involved in the EuroDebt Introducer Scheme, designed to help mortgage brokers earn commission from referring any financially-struggling clients to debt advisors.
Ray soon decided that becoming a franchise owner was a more viable option for him and became a full time debt advisor for EuroDebt in September 2009.
Since then, Ray has been ‘particularly busy’, seeing a substantial rise in business, and at this year’s EuroDebt Franchise Conference in Barnsley he was awarded Newcomer of the Year for his successful start.

Ray Rainbird, Debt Advisor
“I had absolutely no idea I was going to win!” He says modestly. “None of it could have been done without the help and support of my mentor, Phil Ashton, my regional sales manager, Sue Davison, and all of the team at the EuroDebt head office.”
Sue Davison, called him ‘a pleasure to work with’, and said: “He’s just an extremely positive person and is always driving himself forward. He’s very dedicated to what he does and is constantly striving to improve.”
Ray backs this up, attributing his achievement to making himself available ‘seven days a week’. He adds: “I’ll talk to someone at 8 o’clock in the morning or 8 o’clock at night, it’s a full time job and I’m happy to travel wherever necessary to meet with people and discuss a suitable debt solution for them.”
Ray has established himself in the Lancashire area through an active marketing strategy of leaflet distribution and ensuring he follows up anyone who has previously made contact with him, as well as staying in touch with his existing client base.
“It’s a combination of lots of different things,” Ray continues. “The Head Office at EuroDebt provides us with leads, other business is self generated and I have a couple of supporting Introducers and mortgage brokers who pass me clients who are having difficulties.”
Citing a recent case, which took quite a bit of work to resolve, he spoke of a divorced client being passed to him by an introducing broker from the mortgageforce network.
“This guy had unfortunately gotten into a bit of financial trouble, and had close to £25,000 of debt, but we were able to negotiate with his creditors, sign him up to a debt management plan, and the Introducer earned £400 in commission for a client he previously would not have been able to help.” Ray concludes.
