I for Illness
Dealing with people with debts on a daily basis, one thing that strikes me is the amount we take our health for granted. A lot of the indebted individuals I go to see often have corresponding health issues; not only can their health worsen as a result of the stress of debts, but often health reasons can be behind the debt in the first place.
My visit to Mary Price in Southfields a few years back is one case that always sticks in my mind. She was in such a state – really struggling with to cope. I couldn’t help but ask her ‘How do you eat?’.
She told me that she used to buy a bag of potatoes and a tray of eggs so she could eat egg and chips. That’s all she could afford.
Ms Price had around £12,000 of unsecured debts and was struggling to even afford to eat. Her house was freezing, as she told me she couldn’t afford to pay her heating. She lived on her own, and had been in and out of the hospital for many years.
Mary was unable to work – one of the reasons why she was in so much debt, and she was extremely scared about the possibility of never paying off her debts. I put her on a debt management plan and, when I went back to visit her again was so pleased to find the heating on and food in her cupboards.
Seeing the states people get in to, particularly after being ill for a long time, only reinforces my belief that people need to get best advice as soon as possible, rather than leaving it in the hopes that their debts will go away.
