Research shows massive postcode lottery in annual utility bills
Monday 14th June 2010A recent survey has found that gas and electricity bills vary across the country by up to £189 a year.
The data, published by the research group at uSwitch, reveals how Britons subjected to yet another postcode lottery when it comes to paying utility bills, with prices varying by an average of £100.
Unbelievably, this is despite customers being on the same energy plan, paying by the same method and using the same energy.
The huge variation in regional pricing means that being loyal to your local energy supplier doesn't always pay – in fact energy suppliers often charge higher prices to customers living in their incumbent regions.
French supplier, EDF Energy, proved to be the worst offender as it charges its highest prices in its three home regions. This means that customers living in Bristol (Sweb), Brighton (Seeboard) and London will pay £959, £945 and £939 a year respectively, while customers on the same plan, using the same amount of energy living in Nottingham (East Midlands) will pay just £865.
So assuming your local supplier is the cheapest is wrong, suggesting customers should contact an independent energy switching service to find out the most competitive rates they have access to.
Bills can of course prove very stressful and changing gas or electricity provider could give you important savings which could not only help with day to day expenses, but significantly enhance the speed with which you can pay off any debts you may be struggling with.
Debt expert Kevin Still has urged Britons struggling with utility bills to visit www.energyswitching.co.uk to start saving money. He said: “It is vital that people prioritise payment of bills like utilities and council tax, even if you are facing debt problems.
“Using an energy comparison tool like www.energyswitching.co.uk is simple and free to use. Our experience is that it could save you in excess of £30 per month if you haven’t switched.”
