Bank worker embezzled £150,000 to pay off credit card debts
Wednesday 28th July 2010An indebted bank worker has admitted to an £150,000 fraud after racking up £70,000 of credit card debts, according to a BBC news report.
Janie Cameron, 29, of Glasgow, worked as a customer services advisor at a South Lanarkshire branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, where she embezzled the cash between April 2004 and July 2006.
She used the money to pay off around £70,000 of credit card debts, as well as putting it towards a deposit on a flat.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how Cameron was caught when bank employee, Karen McNutt, visited the branch in June 2006 to carry out a routine inspection of transactions.
Noticing that Cameron was processing a number of large cash transactions, McNutt alerted the bank and a full investigation ensued.
The investigation found that the customer services advisor had been removing cash from her teller position and covering her tracks by entering fake manual transactions on the bank’s computer systems.
Cameron was suspended from duty and called to a meeting at the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters following the results of the investigation.
Sentencing has been deferred and the former bank worker has been released on bail.
