Regional Adviser of the Year speaks out on going from bank manager to debt solutions franchisee
Having recently won the Debt Management Today 2009 award for Regional Adviser of the Year (North), Paul Sowerby has spoken out about his move from a bank manager to a franchisee for debt management company, Pentagon.
“Joining Pentagon and working as a debt advisor has been a real role reversal,” Mr Sowerby explained. “This is because I am now helping people manage and pay off their debts, where as before, when I was a bank manager I was encouraging people to get into debt.”
However, Mr Sowerby resented the long, unsociable work hours that his former job required, and the time it was taking away from him being with his family, so two years ago he became involved in working with Pentagon, which fit his background in financial services.
“I liked the fact my earning potential was uncapped, I could work from home and help people in the process, so I decided to launch my franchise in November 2007, which covers Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside.” He continued.
Now working towards an annual turnover of over £100,000, Mr Sowerby speaks highly of the support he receives as part of the franchise package, which includes training courses, meetings, marketing materials and having a mentor on hand.
As those working in the financial services industry face the current challenges of a stumbling house market, low consumer confidence and banks reluctant to take on any risk, Mr Sowerby is proof that a change of direction can be rewarding.
“From day one I have had a steady stream of business from leads generated by head office and myself.” He confirmed. “To keep its franchise owners motivated, Pentagon runs incentives throughout the year. Last year, I smashed the sales target and joined a few other successful franchise owners on a super-car driving day on the Yorkshire Moors. This was an excellent reward as we all had the opportunity to drive cars such as a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Porsche. These incentives are brilliant and I am determined to qualify for the next one, which is a weekend away in London and a night at the Proms.”
